Bhupen Hazarika, born on September 8, 1926, in Sadiya, Assam, was a legendary Indian musician, singer, lyricist, poet, filmmaker, and social activist. His versatile talents and profound impact on various fields earned him recognition not only in Assam but also across the nation.

Bhupen Hazarika's early life was marked by a passion for music and literature. He started writing poems and songs at a young age and displayed a natural flair for creativity. His academic journey took him to Banaras Hindu University, where he pursued a Bachelor's degree in Political Science. He later went on to complete his Master's degree from Columbia University in the United States, where he also earned a doctorate in Mass Communication.

Returning to India, Hazarika began his career in the world of music and films. He was not only a gifted singer but also a skilled composer and lyricist. His compositions were deeply rooted in the folk traditions of Assam, and he often blended various musical genres, including Indian classical, folk, and Western, creating a unique and captivating sound.

Hazarika's iconic song "Bistirno Parore" became an anthem for the Assam Movement, reflecting the spirit of resilience and unity. He used his music as a powerful tool to address social issues, advocate for justice, and celebrate the cultural diversity of India. His commitment to social causes was evident in his involvement with various movements, including the Naxalite movement, where he lent his voice to the marginalized.

Apart from his musical contributions, Bhupen Hazarika was a prolific filmmaker. He directed and produced several acclaimed Assamese films, such as "Shakuntala," "Pratidhwani," and "Mahut Bandhure," addressing social issues and showcasing the cultural richness of Assam.

In addition to his artistic endeavors, Hazarika was a committed social activist. He used his influence to champion the cause of the underprivileged, and his work reflected a deep concern for human rights and justice. He served as a Member of Parliament from 1967 to 1972, representing the Guwahati constituency.

Bhupen Hazarika's impact extended beyond the boundaries of Assam, earning him recognition on the national and international stages. His contributions were honored with numerous awards, including the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, Dada Saheb Phalke and Bharat Ratna (2019) Award, India's highest award in cinema.

Bhupen Hazarika passed away on November 5, 2011, leaving behind a rich legacy that continues to inspire generations. His ability to seamlessly blend art with activism and capture the essence of Assamese culture in his works has established him as one of India's cultural icons.
