Queen Margrethe II
Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, born on April 16, 1940, in Copenhagen, is the eldest daughter of King Frederick IX and Queen Ingrid of Denmark. Her full name is Margrethe Alexandrine Þórhildur Ingrid. As the heir presumptive, Margrethe became Crown Princess at birth, and her early education included studies at the Zahle's School and N. Zahle's College in Copenhagen.
Margrethe's artistic talents became apparent early in life. She developed a passion for painting, and in 1958, she studied at the Copenhagen Art School. Later, she attended the London School of Economics, the University of Aarhus, and the Sorbonne in Paris, where she pursued political science, archaeology, and prehistoric anthropology.
On June 10, 1967, Margrethe married Henri de Laborde de Monpezat, a French diplomat, who later became known as Prince Henrik. The couple had two sons, Crown Prince Frederik and Prince Joachim.
Tragedy struck the Danish royal family in 1972 when Margrethe's father, King Frederick IX, passed away, and she ascended to the throne. Her formal accession took place on January 14, 1972, making her the first queen regnant of Denmark since Margrethe I in the 14th century.
